The presence of the university within the city triggers competitive advantages together with the
various spatial and socio-economic challenges of the urban area. Introducing the historic perspective
of the symbiotic relationship between the city and the university, the paper explores the interaction
between the campus of the University of Novi Sad and its urban neighborhoods. It is supposed that
the university campus can have a more prominent role in the system of centers in Novi Sad through
the integration of its functions and open public spaces with the surrounding area and within the limits
of the campus itself. The presented analysis supports the idea of the policentricity of the city of Novi
Sad.
