Abstract

Thermal power plants that use coal as a fossil fuel produce over 60% of total electricity in Bosnia and Hercehovini and are the biggest polluters of water, soil and air on its territory. It pollution, because of its small territory, has significant cross-border impact on the environment and neighboring countries in the region. Bosnia-Herzegovina’s thermal power plants “produce” a year more than three million tons of ash and slag, and commissioning of a newly constructed TPP Stanari following year, this amount will increase by another 10%. Populated towns and cities such as Tuzla, Kakanj, Ugljevik, Gacko and tenants with their wider community will become or have become undesirable for a healthy life of its citizens. In industrial Developed countries in Europe disposal of all types of waste, including ash and slag from thermal power plants is on so high legal and technical level that neither the Bosnia-Herzegovina’s thermal power plants, with existing technology for transport and disposal of ash and slag, could not get a work permit in these countries.
