Abstract

Cerebrovascular diseases belong to a group of leading mass chronical noninfectious diseases. Ischemic form is present in 80% of all cases. Primary prevention of these diseases includes taking measures in preventing and suppressing of known risk factors in disease development.
The survey includes 866 patients treated for ischemic stroke on the Neurology department of Clinical Center in Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Collected data includes risk factors at all 866 patients. The survey shows that hypertension and hypercholesterolemia are the most present risk factors. It also shows that men are more prone to smoking and alcohol consumption than women. Hypertension is the most common risk factor at women. It is also noticed that often two or more risk factors appear at one patient. Correct prevention, in this case affecting the reduction of smoking and alcohol consumption, treating hypertension, hyperlipidemia, overweight and diabetes would considerably reduce appearing frequency of all forms of stroke.
