Benzodiazepines are one of the most prescribed psychoactive drugs. They are used to treat anxiety and insomnia, although some of them have both anticonvulsant and muscle relaxant effects. Anxiolytics are more often being abused and they are being increasingly and unjustifiably prescribed for milder physical ailments. The use of anxiolytics in the world varies, therefore the aim of the study was to examine the use of anxiolytics in the Republic of Srpska in relation to the surrounding countries.
The use of anxiolytics was monitored through two indicators: defined daily doses of thousand inhabitants per day (DDD / 1000inh / day) and total financial consumption (financial consumption in euros per thousand inhabitants - EU / 1000inh).
The use of psycholeptics in Republic of Srpska is significantly lower than in Serbia, about 26% of consumption in Serbia. According to the financial indicators, 5.8 times less funds are spent on psycholeptics in Republic of Srpska compared to Bosnia and Herzegovina and 8.6 times less than in Serbia. Anxiolytics are significantly less used in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Republic of Srpska compared to Serbia (64% and 26% of consumption compared to consumption in Serbia). The most commonly used benzodiazepine is bromazepam, both in the Republic of Srpska and in the surrounding countries.
The use of anxiolytics in Republic of Srpska is significantly lower than in neighboring countries and is close to the consumption of these drugs in developed EU countries. Low and rational use of anxiolytics will prevent abuse and create dependence on anxiolytics.
