Abstract

Fish production in the Republic of Srpska is not at the same level as more developed countries in the world. However, all the necessary preconditions for a more intensive fish production are present. Republika Srpska has a large water potential and if only part of that water potential was used, fish production would increase significantly. Fish farming can be developed on classic temperate or cold water farms, on natural hydrographic localities and in non-classical ways (cage farming, recirculation systems, individual farms, etc.). For the non-classical fish production, reproductive centers are necessary in which sexually mature individuals would spawn and be reared to pre-consumption size (juvenile fish), and then, in the live state, these individuals could be transferred to the farm site. A larger volume of fish production would be of financial significance, but also it would have an impact in the field of employment. Fish produced on farms can be processed further. A fish feed factory is also necessary for the development of fishing. Fish production should be harmonized with the criteria for the quality of fish meat. Although to a lesser extent, the catch of fish from natural aquatic ecosystems contributes to a degree to the development of fisheries in the Republic of Srpska (sport and commercial fishing).
