Abstract

Utilization of wood and plastic waste in central Bosnia represents an opportunity
to improve economic development, energy efficiency and ecological sustainability.
Due to the wealth of forest resources of this region and the large number
of wood processors, the generated wood waste could be used for the production of
bioenergy, pellets and composite materials. In this way, in addition to reducing the
amount of waste, it would contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions and encourage
the use of renewable energy sources. Plastic waste, as a product of modern life,
although a challenge due to its long-term decomposition, can be recycled into the
production of new plastic materials, construction products and even synthetic fuels. In
addition to the individual and combined utilization of wood and plastic waste can lead
to innovative solutions, such as wood-plastic composites - WPC, which are already
widely used in construction and other industrial branches in the world. Achieving
these goals requires the development of recycling infrastructure as well as the application
of legislative support. Encouraging these activities can bring multiple benefits
through new jobs, economic development, reducing the negative impact of waste
on the environment and increasing the competitiveness of the region on the market.
