Abstract

The process of reallocating factors of production, such as labor, land and capital from less to more productive sectors, represents a trigger for achieving a higher level of development of modern economic systems. Due to the development of ICT technologies, the optimization of work operations and the growth of productivity are ensured, which has a positive effect on the competitivnes of the sector and the entire economy. Historically, the activities of the manufacturing industry have been the driver for achieving higher rates of economic growth in countries. Namely, the manufacturing industry had the function of a catalyst for the growth of the productivity of the economy. The paper examines the role of the manufacturing sector and structural economic changes in increasing the economic development of the Serbian economy. The methodological part involves the calculation of Krugman’s index of specialization in the performance of activities in the manufacturing sector, with a comparative analysis of the results obtained for six regions of Serbia. The aim of the research paper is to present the importance of structural transformations of the economy for achieving a higher level of economic development. The paper confirms convergences, i.e. “catching up” and divergences, i.e. “lagging behind” in the level of specialization in the manufacturing industries, analyzed according to six differen regions of Serbia.
