Abstract

This paper explores the role of civil servants in achieving the global sustainable development goals. The public sector has a key responsibility in creating and maintaining an environment that supports economic growth, social progress and the well-being of citizens. The foundation for achieving the sustainable development goals is good governance, transparency, efficiency and accountability in the work of public institutions. Also, ensuring security and the rule of law is of essential importance for building citizens’ trust in institutions and the government system.Key factors in achieving sustainable development include transparent and responsible management of public finances, as well as the improvement of policies related to protection from natural disasters and risk management. Sustainable development, as an imperative of modern society, requires a joint effort of all sectors, especially cooperation between the state and the private sector, in order to achieve a balance between economic, environmental and social goals. The paper analyzes the role of each individual in the civil service, because each civil servant can contribute to the achievement of sustainable development through his actions. Every action at the level of state institutions has a significant role in the implementation of policies and initiatives that promote sustainability. As an example of good practice in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the paper looks at the successful process of transferring the UN Agenda 2030 to the national framework. By adopting the document Framework for achieving the goals of sustainable development in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was accepted by all levels of government, Bosnia and Herzegovina laid a solid foundation for achieving the global goals of sustainable development at the national level.
