Abstract

This paper raises the issue and examines the causes and effects of the neglect of abandoned and underused spaces in the Republic of Srpska (brownfield spaces, greenfield spaces), emphasising the necessity for their regeneration. Urban regeneration is manifoldly understood as a process, strategy and comprehensive method of urban renewal  ‐  very subtle in its relation to the existing structure and activities, and based on the principles of respect for the character of space, re ‐ affirmation and advancement of the local and regional identities, and consideration for the historical and contemporary contexts. The problems and potentials of these strategic spatial resources are explored and valued from the environmental, economic and social perspectives, and the use of an integrated approach to regeneration, as part of strategic planning, accordingly proposed.
